Frontier model
The largest and most capable model a vendor currently offers, priced accordingly.
Also written: frontier models, flagship model.
Every vendor ships a range: a flagship, a mid-sized model, and something small and fast. The flagship is the frontier model, and it is typically five to twenty times the price of the smallest one in the same family.
The useful habit is to try the cheapest model in the family first and move up only when it measurably fails, rather than defaulting to the frontier because it is the one in the headlines. On a great deal of real work the small model is indistinguishable and an order of magnitude cheaper.
